Why Microsoft named their search engine Bing

May 28, 2009

Sad:

Why did Microsoft pick this name for its search engine?

We know our current brand doesn’t have great recognition.

At least Microsoft knows that its a crappy brand.

Anyone with money could have built iTunes?

May 28, 2009

I don’t think so:

Georges suggests looking at the value that Steve Jobs has created with iTunes and the iPhone. That could have been done by any entrepreneur with decent VC backing. Sure, the Apple brand helped, but in the big picture, brands are created from products. Jobs did nothing that another entrepreneur working in real partnership with a VC could not have done, too. Jobs was effectively both VC and entrepreneur. He allocated capital (the primary job of a CEO) and built the team to execute the vision.

This is completely false. VCs are driven by short-term returns, Apple is not. They invest in projects for two years to test, revise and market. Most VCs want a firm to go public by that time. Second, VCs lack vision and often over-rule entrepreneurs when it comes to key execution decisions. iTunes + iPhone can never happen because VCs will compromise on product quality and vision to get to market fast.
