A prime example of an article that says nothing

May 4, 2009

What an absolute mess of an article. This article is the prime evidence of journalistic rot. It’s full of note taking and dire warnings but nothing deeper about why Apple is considering this move or where it would take them. Total traffic troll over substance:

Apple’s push into chips could unnerve suppliers
The iPhone now uses chips from a variety of suppliers including Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, Broadcom Corp, Marvell Technology Inc, CSR Plc and Infineon Technologies AG, analysts say.

If Apple succeeds in coming up with its own chip, it could potentially dislodge at least one of these companies from the iPhone, while sending notice of its intent to take an even bigger role in the creation of its products.

No shit. Yes, if it comes up its own chip, it will let go of others.

“Apple is basically saying we don’t want to put our future in somebody else’s hands, said Craig Berger, an analyst with FBR Capital Markets. “The key for them is super low-power and better graphics processing.”

Samsung and Apple declined to comment.

That last sentence just dangles there. What did they refuse comment about? What did you ask them? “Apple s basically saying we don’t want to put our future in somebody else’s hands”? Or is Apple saying that other companies are not capable of providing what they need from a processor?

Although it would not be a huge monetary loss for Samsung — analysts estimate its iPhone chip generates revenue in the low hundreds of millions of dollars — it would remove the South Korean company from a mobile platform that is expected to see huge growth in the coming years.

What will Samsung do about it? What can they do? Don’t they have a CE business of their own? Isn’t Samsung the biggest supplier of mobile chips? Insert statistics here.

Wu believes Apple has been working on an application processor for the iPhone for around a year. He agreed that any new chip is at least a year away and won’t make it into the next iPhone, which is expected to be released this summer.

Wu believed that Apple was going to introduce a tablet in January. What is Wu’s record on Apple predictions? What does he know about the Apple pipeline? (Here’s a hint: nothing).

But some analysts find it hard to believe Apple would leap into the complex and competitive semiconductor business.

They used to own a chip operation and started a chip design business with IBM (remember the PowerPC?) and bought a chip company. Like it or not they already are in the semiconductor “business”.

“It’s feasible for them to do it but I don’t know that it would be practical,” said Jim McGregor, chief technology strategist at In-Stat, adding that chip design costs hundreds of millions of dollars.

It’s feasible but not practical and chip design is hard. Isn’t that why they bought a freakin’ chip firm?

“Apple isn’t the mega company that can do everything very well,” he said, but added that Apple is profitable and well-positioned.

What is it that they are trying do? Is it everything? Or design something for their particular use? Well-positioned for what?

What utter crap. Reuters whould be ashamed of themselves for publishing this crap, but truth be told, their probalt patting themselves on their backs for this crap.
