April 22, 2009Give it up, Scott.
Apple’s Quarter: Neither Golden Nor Delicious
Apple reports its fiscal second-quarter earnings after the bell Wednesday, and the chances of a big positive surprise are as slim as the rumored new iPhone.
Apple has had the hottest hand in consumer tech for quite a while, but it hasn’t exhibited the right kind of magic to offset a fizzling economy. For example, growth in Apple’s Mac sales is expected to have stopped for the first time in five years.
Analysts estimate about 2.2 million Macs were sold in the quarter that ended last month. That would be down 11% sequentially and 2% below the year-ago period. One reason for the skid is price. The average Apple computer sells for about $1,400, or more than three times the price of a netbook.
So the drop due to macroeconomic conditions is 2%? 2% drop in a bad economy without any price discount and brand value intact? I’ll take it! (Psst. Scott, market analyst expert, sequential decrease doesn’t count for shit because it’s a holiday quarter and you have to take into account seasonality, you ginormous twit)
Apple Crushes Earnings, Guidance Fine
Apple (AAPL) handily beat the Street’s sales and earnings estimates for the March quarter, and June quarter guidance looks fine — conservative as usual.
Apple’s iPhone shipments were particularly impressive. Apple sold 3.8 million iPhones during the quarter, beating the Street’s 3.3 million consensus (and some of today’s revisions to 3.7 million following AT&T’s release this morning). iPod shipments beat expectations, too. Apple sold 11 million iPods last quarter, beating the Street’s estimate by 1 million, or 10%.
In this era of punditry, one can be wrong all the time and be rewarded for it: Larry Kudlow, Jim Cramer, Bill Kristol ….
