Macworld rumor: Mac OS X 10.7 (Sabertooth) is the cloud OS

January 5, 2009

I heard from a friend of a friend who is a trusted source of a friend at Apple that 10.7 (codename Sabertooth) will be entirely cloud-based. Basically every device (desktops, Mac netbooks, iPhones, iPods, laptops, and other devices) will not have an OS. Once you turn them on, they will connect to the cloud and download the kernel. After that, a user can edit movies, music, photos, and spreadsheets and pretty much everything else from the big cloud. It will amazing.

i, Cringe has also noted that Apple’s new chip division has created a special cloud processor to transmit and receive data from the white space frequency – the one that the FCC recently okay’ed fr broadband purposes. Combined with the “Ether” chip and Sabertooth, Apple will have a cloud platform bar none.

  1. Not happening. I know for a 100% fact.

  2. Totally ridiculous hoax.

  3. I hope NOT true. I want my stuff with me and NOT in the cloud (read potential other’s hands). The future is not the cloud (except for some niche cases) but 1TB flash drive to hold all your stuff, with two extra backup copies and synchronized with your Mac. Besides this for the ultimate mobile computing (see first picture, the iNetbook and the iNetbook rerendered):

Next Apple moves will be Books and Games…

    • I KNOW what if you’re in the middle of the highway and have no access to internet? you can’t turn on your own computer cuz you’re not connected to the internet to access the OS? how is that better than what we have now lol also we won’t have any privacy this way… all our files will be publicly transmitted to a server?

  4. [...] [...]

  8. You, sir, are a complete idiot.

  9. Impossible, do you understand the word “impossible”? Does your friend too?
So, it’s impossible, the cloudOS is a dream of google, not Apple.

  10. utter suicide

  11. I will not pay to buy something that resides in a cloud, be it sabertooth or saber-nail.

  12. Could be possible as is’t Apple building one of the worlds largest data centres to be completed in about 2 years?

    • Maybe for their Moble Me service? App Store? Anything else?

  13. The future actually is in the cloud.. just not the OS. The whole point of the cloud is to hold your information… An operating system isn’t really considered information.

The whole point being is that all of our documents, music, etc, will indeed eventually be online. It’s already done in many circumstances. For instance, my work uses a software called ‘ConnectWise’. We keep all of our contacts, company records, service tickets, etc, in this cloud. That way, we can access it on our blackberries/iphones, web browsers, etc.

The OS will never be in a cloud as you need the OS to access the cloud.

Nice concept though… but please, don’t post rumors unless they’re at least a little bit logical. This is almost like saying that eventually, the cloud will be inside a cloud.

  14. That’s a silly idea. Internet connectivity will soon decline if it isn’t already as we decline the oil production curve.

Trusting files and applications to the cloud will just make the system more brittle and the collapse more complete. We should be putting in place resilient systems, not further networking the world.

  15. Not true, I agree with the other people who with posted.

Also I thought the code name would be lion?

  16. Impossible. What if the internet is down? Can’t fetch the kernel? No way. Also, why is everyone so excited about having all their data, sensitive or not, out on some server somewhere to be read by some subset of boobs at Apple. Don’t get me wrong, the cloud is good for some things, not all things. No medical data, for example, will be safe out on the “cloud”.

So they need to ensure there’s a way for companies to host their own private cloud. Then I think, ok fine, look at Ext JS desktop. What’s the diff?
