Holy Shnikes. One person racks up $175K in credit card debt

February 15, 2008

Credit Slips:

This debt was incurred on 25 cards from 12 different lenders, all major national financial institutions. No less than 9 of the cards and $80744.16 of the debt were for one lender, Bank of America. The debtor’s annual post-tax income is listed at around $85,000, and the debtor has been in her current job and industry for a while.

Someone was gaming the system and it didn’t matter because banks were asleep at the wheel!

Countdown to the ad network bubble starts …

February 15, 2008

Now:

Cable executives have indicated that leading operators had banded together to fund the development of a system, code-named “Project Canoe,” (by industry research arm CableLabs), which would allow an advertiser to easily buy national spots.

Yesterday:

Tribune, Gannett (NYSE: GCI), Hearst and the New York Times Company (NYSE: NYT) are forming a joint new company called quadrantONE, and transferring some of their open online inventory to the firm to sell.

A buttload of missing iPhones found

February 15, 2008

SAI:

An eye-opening stat we hadn’t seen until today: China Mobile, the biggest wireless carrier in China, said there were 400,000 unlocked iPhones operating on its network at the end of 2007.

This explains why China Mobile doesn’t care to deal with Apple – why bother when they are getting subscribers and they don’t have to pay Apple a tax.

The most under-reported story keeps getting reported over and over

February 15, 2008

Vnunet:

Over 90 per cent of computer users believe that cyber-criminals will step up their attacks on Apple Macs in the future, according to a new poll.

Scary!

However, half of respondents to the Sophos survey said that the problem will be as great as that faced by Windows users.

Whew. Relief.

Commentators have pointed out that the threats are less about the inherent security of any given operating system and more down to economies of scale.

As the popularity of Macs increases, and Apple improves its market share, it becomes increasingly viable for professional hackers to target Mac users.

Oh no, I am scared again.

A similar survey two years ago revealed that only 79 per cent of computer users believed that Macs would become more commonly targeted by hackers, indicating that users are now less optimistic about the likelihood of their computers being attacked in the future.

Oh, that’s not so scary. Maybe George Ou have an opinion on this? Am I too smug? I don’t mean to be.

Where I rewrite Scoble’s photostory

This is where Microsoft does research that never pays offMicrosoft Research

There are many researchers working on recreating a Apple store like experience

Kevin Schofield at Microsoft Research

This is Microsoft’s version of the Genius Bar. There are not many people waiting for fixes because the Genius Bar only fixes Vista problems and since everyone opted for XP, the lines are not long.

Wide open spaces

Bill Gates got this board as a two-fer when he bought Leonardo da Vinci’s codex. No one has been able to decipher the formulas, but the whiteboard has been used in Microsoft ad campaigns.

Equations

This magic mirror makes everyone looks like John Dvorak.

Andy Wilson, researcher at Microsoft

This is the conference room where we meet with Ballmer. When he looks close to throwing a tantrum, we crash Exchange so the doors won’t open from the inside. See, let me show you. All you do is press this. Anywhere.

This conference room is mine!

We were bored and we tried to recreate the scene in Star Wars where Luke, Han, and R2 are about to get crushed by the trash compactor

Anechoic chamber at Microsoft Research, Phil Chou

We are researching a new conference system called RoundTable. It’s actually a rectangle table, but its called RoundTable because we use it to call for pizza.

Microsoft Research

This shows the number of active bloggers using MSN Spaces:

Parking is available!

Microsoft Research offices are located very close to an IKEA store.

Lots of book cases

We got these coffee tables from an old Starbucks.

The carpet is tiled, so can be lifted off

The tables came with this guy. We think he’s a barista, but we are afraid to ask.

Microsoft Research

A lot of researchers spend their time looking at the top two floors because it makes them think they are entering an Apple store.

Open conference rooms

These two are people ready.

Jennifer Chayes and Christian Borgs, Microsoft Researchers

Next, Robert will make an equally fun-filled visit to the local vets office.

McAfee’s desperate fear mongering

February 15, 2008

What a load of BS.

A study by technology security firm McAfee showed that one in seven global mobile users have been exposed in someway to a mobile virus. Another survey conducted by McAfee concluded that almost three out of four users were concerned about the security of mobile services.

STFU, already. No one wants your crapware anymore. Innovate or die, mf-ers.
